We decided to get a dog, like a lot of other folks out there, during the pandemic. We knew when we got him that we would want to install an invisible dog fence for him. Most of our neighbors have them and have had great success in training their dogs to respect the fence.
With some advice from one of those neighbors, I decided that I would do the installation myself. I had actually purchased another brand of fence (a more common one sold both online and in big box retailers) and got it all but installed before I tested it and found interference issues with my neighbor's fence.

Based on some advice from a local installer, I ordered another fence, this time the eXtreme Dog Fence brand. He mentioned that you could adjust the frequency on this one, which would help with interference issues from utilities and neighboring pet fences.

The Good and the Bad
For every product that is reviewed on this site, I like to condense the information down so that you can spend less time reading reviews and spend more time enjoying your life with friends and loved ones.
I was able to come up with four positive highlights for the eXtreme Dog Fence In-Ground Fence. On the other side of the coin, there were four areas for improvement that I was able to identify.
First, the positive highlights:
Things I liked
After taking a good look at eXtreme Dog Fence In-Ground Pet Fence, these are the positive things that stood out:
- Offers professional-grade features that can be hard to find in most other brands and models. Simple installation and low-profile means you won't even notice that it's there.
- Multiple configuration options — freqency and correction strength — that will help make sure your installation succeeds regardless of obstacles that you'll run into.
- Durable and reliable. Offers a solid warranty (1 year that converts to 5 when you register the product) but I have been very happy with the quality of the collar and transmitter for over a year since I installed mine.
- Thick coating used for the wire definitely feels more durable than the wire you'll see with a brand like PetSafe. While the wires are the same gauge, the coating is thicker and more durable. This can be nice during installation because you don't have to worry about getting rough with it, but it can be more difficult to work with as well.

Things I didn't like
The downsides that I noticed after looking at eXtreme Dog Fence In-Ground Pet Fence were:
- Non-rechargable collar. The eXtreme Dog Fence in-ground pet system does not offer a rechargable collar at this time. The collar does have an indicator light that will blink when your batteries are running low, but it can be a scary thing to realize that you've been letting your dog go outside with a dead collar.
- Expensive, proprietary batteries. On top of being unable to recharge the collar, the battery that this model takes is very specific to eXtreme Dog Fence. And along with that, the batteries that eXtreme Dog Fence does sell are pretty expensive. Plan to spend around $20 for a replacement. On the plus side, the battery itself does seem to last a long time (we've been using our collar daily for over a year and have had to change the battery once).
- Not easily available. Unlike a system like the PetSafe in-ground pet fence, you can't just run to your local Home Depot to buy parts for this one. Ultimately this shouldn't be a major factor, but it can definitely be a hassle to need to order something for it and have to wait two days or more to receive it in the mail.
- Thick wire coating is difficult to work with. This is a good thing and a bad thing, as the thicker coating should result in longer life and better performance. The problems can come when you're trying to install it. You'll put a lot of energy toward making sure the wire stays in place in the ground when you're trying to bury it.

Conclusion
There is no higher endorsement that I can give a product. I use this model myself and have been very happy with the results for over a year.
Based on looks (and, let's be honest, a goofy name) I probably wouldn't have even given this brand and model a second look. I wouldn't have found it if not for some great advice from a professional installer, but my dog and my family are grateful that I did.
