Quick Summary

One of the most popular and widely sold broadcast spreaders on today's market, the Scotts EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader is a solid option for any moderately sized back yard. Durable and reliable, it is a model that will last many years, and you should have no problem getting your money's worth.

A Market Leader in Spreaders

When I needed to buy a new broadcast spreader, I knew Scotts was a brand I could trust. Having owned other smaller Scotts spreaders in the past, I knew that they had a lot of solid options that would be reliable, accurate and last me a lifetime.

I believe that they are one of the market leaders for a reason. I have been satisfied with just about any Scotts products I've used in the past and, for me, that is no different with the EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader.

Easy for Beginners, Reliable for Experts

This spreader is simple to operate and very user-friendly, so even new homeowners or folks who have never had to maintain a lawn before can use it without fear.

Those who have used a lot of other spreaders in the past will find that the straightforward operation means this will last many years to come and always perform when you need it.

Product Information

Before we dive into the details, let's start by taking a look at some basic product information about the Scotts EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader. The following information was provided by the manufacturer (ScottsMIracle-Gro) on September 8, 2022.

From the Manufacturer

Here are some features that have been provided by the manufacturer:

  • This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box.

The Good and the Bad

For every product that is reviewed on this site, I like to condense the information down so that you can spend less time reading reviews and spend more time enjoying your life with friends and loved ones.

I was able to come up with three positive highlights for the Scotts EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader. On the other side of the coin, there were three areas for improvement that I was able to identify.

First, the positive highlights:

Things I liked

After taking a good look at Scotts EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader, these are the positive things that stood out:

  • Solid and easy to use. Beyond the EdgeGuard feature, this is a pretty straightforward model, which is a good thing to look for in a broacast spreader.
  • Easy to clean and store, the EdgeGuard DLX can easily fit in your garage or shed.
  • The EdgeGuard feature can be turned on and off, which is nice because the feature itself has quite a few downsides. Read on for more information about that.

And now, some things you might want to watch out for:

Things I didn't like

The downsides that I noticed after looking at Scotts EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader were:

  • A relatively small hopper means that you'll be refilling quite often if you have a very large yard. My yard is only about 6,000 sq. feet and, depending on the product I'm putting down, it can take three or more refills to cover the entire area.
  • The EdgeGuard feature isn't really that great. In reality it's easy enough to space out your pattern so that you don't really need the EdgeGuard feature. And in my experience, it effectively causes you to put down twice as much product when you have EdgeGuard enabled, so it can be easier to burn or otherwise damage your yard.
  • This might sound bad but it comes from experience — it can be easy to forget to turn EdgeGuard back off once you're away from an edge and onto the middle of your yard. I have personally gone a few passes into the middle without noticing that the EdgeGuard was still on, and I ended up with a funky pattern in my grass until the fertilizer faded.

Conclusion

Overall I would recommend the Scotts EdgeGuard DLX Broadcast Spreader. Even though I'm not really blown away by any of the features, it is the current market standard with it comes to spreaders, and it'll last you for many years to come if you treat it well.

Once upon a time I had to make the decision myself as to whether or not I should buy this spreader or another, and ultimately this is the one that's hanging in my garage today. It was a good decision for me and I'm sure it'll be a good decision for you too.
